Sandy Lodge is a walk or short bus journey away from a range of shops.
Food Shopping
Holetown (also including Sunset Crest an area which is part of Holetown)
Holetown has a new (opened November 2017), much improved and large Massy Supermarket. Massy is a chain of supermarkets and superstores throughout the island. You will find all your grocery needs here – meat, bakery items, deli, fish (mostly frozen), fruit and vegetables, wine, beer, hardware. Waitrose items are stocked throughout the store. The store is open 8am-8pm Monday to Saturday and 9am-4pm on a Sunday. There is plenty of parking outside the mall and it is very close to the bus stop.
Rubis Petrol Station, Holetown – has a good grocery section and you can buy many everyday food items e.g. bread, milk, dairy products, wine/beer, drinks, tins
Jordan’s Supermarkets, Speightstown and Fitts Village – see their website for uptodate details – jordansupermarkets.com. They have branches in Fitts Village and Speightstown – both accessible if you are relying on the bus. They stock a wide range of grocery items, but quality not as good as other supermarkets.
Cost u Less – if you have a car, a Cost U Less is easily accessible. It is more like a warehouse and for some items prices are about 25% lower, e.g. wine and beer. You can buy everything here and there’s plenty of parking. No frills! See their website for maps and opening times costuless.com
Carlton and A1 Supermarket – Black Rock Road. If you have a car you can easily reach this supermarket and is about 10-15 mins away near to Bridgetown. Open 7 days a week. long hours of opening, quality goods, very wide choice, some Tesco products, wines and spirits (more expensive than Massy), food prices reasonable, good fruit and veg, meat gets a good review from guests, deli. If you catch the Bridgetown bus and ask to get off at the Carlton Supermarket – bus stop near to supermarket. In my opinion better than Jordans.
Butcher – there is an excellent butcher, Boulevard Butchers, behind the RUBIS petrol station in Holetown and about a 2 min walk from the West Mall. They have a range of different cuts of meats, BBQ foods (kebabs, sausages, steaks), cold meats, cheeses, some deli items and are now selling fish. The staff are very helpful and it is well worth asking for what you require as not all their products are on display. Very good value for money. Closed on a Monday and Sunday.
Fruit and Veg – There is a local stall about 5 mins from the supermarket – walk towards the Sunset Crest medical centre (just past Just Grillin’). Here you can buy, for example, locally grown mangoes, bananas and salad foods.
Fish – there are six fish markets – Paynes Bay, Six Men’s Bay, Speightstown, Bridgetown, Tent Bay and Oistins.
Closest to the villa is next to John Moore’s Bar on the way to Speightstown (there is a fruit & veg stall next door). An even better one is at Paynes Bay, which is about 10 mins in the car, south of Holetown. It is accessible on the bus going towards Bridgetown. There is a small parking area. All the fish is very fresh and expertly prepared.
General Shopping – souvenirs, clothes etc.
Holetown
Holetown is the main shopping area outside Bridgetown. Here you will find banks, a pharmacy (in the Massy Supermarket), souvenir shops, clothes shops etc. You can park (for free) either in front of or behind the Massy Supermarket (West Mall).
The Limegrove Centre – Upmarket area of shops, restaurants, a bar and a cinema. Mainly Designer shops at top prices. There are a mix of clothes shops, shoe shops and souvenir type shops.
The Chattel Village (see photo below) – Traditional style buildings where you will find Café Carizma but also, for example, a clothes and jewellery shop, deli and the Best of Barbados Gift Shop.
Sunset Mall – Further along the main road, you will find the Sunset Mall which has a large Cave Shepherd department store, a gift shop and bank.
Earthworks
A great place for souvenirs if you like pottery. There is lots of choice of all sorts of plates, pots, bowls, mugs etc.. They have a very distinctive style and in many different colours and ranges. Goods can be bought Duty Free – you just need to know your return date home. Near to Earthworks you will also see an art gallery and you can buy drinks. During the week you can watch the guys design and make the pottery. Plenty of parking.
It isn’t that easy to find and you will need a car. Take the road behind Cost U Less and follow the signs.
Markets
The Holders Farmers Market at Holders Hill.
This market takes place every Sunday 9am-2pm and is in the grounds of Holders House. You will find organic food – fruit, veg, freshly baked bakery items, arts and crafts – jewellery, household decorative goods eg bright cushions, paintings etc. Lots of the stalls are run by the producers / makers of the items. You will find quirky souvenirs and interesting food items.
There are places to get a coffee, cool juices, breakfast, lunch or a cool beer. There’s plenty of shade and space for children to run around.
The market, set up in 2011, aims to help local farmers and artisans to sell their produce and for the island to become more sustainable.
There is plenty of parking available if you decide to drive or you can catch the Bridgetown Bus and get off at the Paynes Bay Esso petrol station. It is about a 10 min. uphill walk, to the market or you could catch the free shuttle bus that runs between the main road and the market. For more information please see Holders Market
Well worth a visit, however – it is seasonal and probably best from December – April/May. During off peak months there are less stalls open.
Banks and Money
There are Bds$2 to US$1.
Credit cards are widely accepted except in rum shops, taxis, on buses and in some Bajan restaurants. In most places, US$ are accepted as are Bds$ with the 2Bds$ to US$1 rate. When you pay in $US any change will be given in $Bds.
There are three banks in Holetown, including Royal Bank of Canada and First Caribbean. Both have a cash machine and will exchange money into $Bds.
There are plenty of ATMs in Barbados.
Post Office – there is a P.O. in Holetown and Speightstown.
